Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) uses a very low-level X-ray to determine the density or strength of bones. BMD is able to diagnose osteopenia as well as osteoporosis. BMD tests are also used to determine how well osteoporosis medicine is working and help predict risk of future bone fractures.

What is the difference between osteoporosis and osteopenia?

Both conditions are characterized based on bone mineral density measurements. In simple terms, osteoporosis is defined by bones that are very weak and can easily break, even from minor bumps or falls.

Osteopenia on the other hand, are bones that are weaker than normal, but not as fragile as in osteoporosis - this is usually a warning sign that preventative measures for bone loss needs to be taken.

It’s important to note that both osteoporosis and osteopenia can be managed and treated through lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, exercise, and, in some cases, medication. Regular bone density monitoring and early intervention can help prevent the progression from osteopenia to osteoporosis and reduce the risk of fractures.
